Androphobia is natural
i.e. fear of males
What follows is almost banal, if it weren’t for significant implications.
Males ARE scary!
Compared to females:
Biologically
- They’re bigger
- More likely to use violence
- they’re socialised that violence is acceptable
- their size/strength indicates that it’s more likely to be useful
- More willing to take risks
- More desperate
- Unmet sexual need is disproportionate (reflected in Tinder/Grindr/OF demographics)
Social
- Represented as more violent
- news/statistics etc. highlight men’s violence
- this reinforces audience sensitivity to the innate scariness (compounding)
This contributes to:
- Homophobia disproportionately experienced by men
- Lesbians are relatively marginalised; they lack the innate ‘threat’ of males
- Gay men are the only ones that subject straight men to unwanted and ‘scary’ sexual interest’
- sexual interest from women may be unwanted, but it’s not scary
- Transphobia disproportionately experienced by non-passing trans-women
- Miscommunication
- People will make cautious assumptions and take precautions which may be counterproductive
- Taboos around male emotionality
